You Can Help Prevent Medication Errors

Unfortunately, medication errors can and do happen frequently. A minor error in medication can adversely affect your health and the outcome of your medical treatment. Many medication errors are the result of poor communication between patients and their doctors.

The good news is that you can take steps to help prevent some medication errors. Here are some tips:

  • Keep a current medication list and take it with you to every doctor visit. Be sure to include all medicine, prescription, over-the-counter medication and any vitamins and herbs you may be taking.
  • Make sure doctors and other health care providers know your medication allergies.
  • Make sure you can read the prescription your doctor writes before leaving the doctor’s office.
  • Talk to a nurse or a pharmacist. They also can help you get a treatment plan that is right for you.

Bring a friend or family member with you when you visit your doctor.

Remember: Your medicine was prescribed for you. Never share your prescription medicines with anyone.
