Watching Your Weight When
You Have Heart Failure
Congestive heart
failure means
your heart can’t
pump as well as it
should. But healthy
lifestyle choices can
help. Every day, you can choose
to eat heart-friendly foods, not
smoke, take your medications,
and exercise.
There’s another simple
action you can take: stepping
onto the scale. Why? Sudden
weight gain could mean that
your heart is having trouble and
that fluid is building up in your
body. This extra fluid shows up
as new pounds.
Experts say you should weigh
yourself every morning. Do it
right after you go to the bathroom,
but before you eat. Writing
it down may help you notice any
changes. If you gain 3 or more
pounds in one week, call your
doctor.
The heavier you are, the harder
your heart has to work. These
tips can help you maintain a
healthy weight:
- Avoid salting your food, and choose foods labeled “low sodium.”
- Enjoy low- or nonfat desserts, such as nonfat frozen yogurt, angel-food cake, or fruit ices.
- Try baking or roasting foods instead of frying them.
- Ask your doctor about exercise. Together, you can decide what type and how much is right for you.
