Is It an Emergency?

Photo of a woman on the phone with a sick child in the backgroundDear Paramount Member:

It has become increasingly evident that consumers are using the emergency room (ER) for routine medical care more often than their Primary Care Physician’s (PCP’s) office. For conditions such as upper respiratory infections, chronic pain, rashes or coughs, call your PCP. Visiting the ER for the treatment of minor illnesses could result in you having the responsibility for the cost of the services obtained. In addition to services obtained through your PCP being more cost-effective, they may be more comprehensive because your physician is familiar with your health history. Please remember that the overcrowding of ERs is often a result of patients seeking care for routine medical complaints. Emergency care for trauma, evaluation of symptoms that may be related to heart attack or stroke, severe pain, and difficulty breathing are appropriate reasons to visit the ER.
