Pregnancy What’s Normal … and Not
If you’re pregnant, there may be times when your
whole body seems out of control. Is that normal, or
should you call the doctor?
You may have some uncomfortable symptoms
during pregnancy. Some are caused by changes in
your hormones. Others may be due to the pressure
and weight of your growing baby. The list of
normal symptoms includes:
- Puffiness in face, hands, legs, feet, and ankles
- Nausea and vomiting, heartburn, gas, and bloating
- Backaches and leg cramps at night
- Frequent urination, leaky bladder, constipation, and hemorrhoids
- Swollen gums that may bleed easily
- Stuffy nose and shortness of breath
- Brown spots on the face, stretch marks, and varicose veins
Some symptoms may indicate a serious problem.
Call your doctor immediately if you have:
- Vaginal bleeding or spotting, unusual fluid discharge, lower abdominal cramping, lower back pain, or regular tightening of the abdomen (contractions) that doesn’t go away
- Pain or burning when you urinate, especially if you have a fever
- Bad headaches, strong stomach pain, or cramps
- Mid-back pain
- Unusual rash
- Dizziness, severe nausea or vomiting, or fever
- Pelvic pressure (This may or may not be normal, so call your doctor.)
The bottom line is that if a new symptom concerns
you, talk with your doctor.
