Decisions, Decisions

Photo of girl paintingYou think it may be time for a change—and you're feeling overwhelmed. Nervous that you won't succeed, you stall and worry. How do you get off the fence?

Remind yourself that you're in control. Then follow these steps:

Define the question. Write down the change that you're pondering. For example, "Should I quit drinking alcohol?" Next, list all options, including "make no decision." Then note the pros and cons for each choice.

Inform yourself. You may want to consult an expert, such as a doctor or counselor. Also consider doing some research online. Just be sure to stick to Web sites from credible organizations, such as government groups.

Clarify your values. What matters most to you? Your physical and mental health? Being a good role model? Reviewing your values reminds you of which outcome to strive for.

Plan what comes next. Once you reach a decision, break the action into manageable steps. For example, if you've decided to quit smoking, your next steps might include choosing a quit day and joining a support group.

Remember, be confident that you can change. Following these steps will help you feel in control of your life—and of your success.
