![]() | Easier Access to Mammograms A mammography is an important tool in detecting breast cancer. Unfortunately, not as many women in our area are getting mammograms. Paramount surveyed 349 women to learn what the barriers are to having a mammogram and how to address them. Here is what we learned from the survey respondents and what we have done so far to make it easier to get a mammogram.
Breast self-exams are important, but according to American Cancer Society guidelines, women should also have an annual clinical breast exam beginning at age 20 and annually after age 40 (age 35 if there is a family history of breast cancer). If you have not had a clinical breast exam in the past year or are due for a mammogram, call your doctor. Currently, mammography is the best available way to detect breast changes in the earliest stages of breast cancer. Mammograms can reveal breast cancers one-and-a-half to two years before they can be felt. Early detection is the key to effectively treating breast cancer. The benefit of early detection with mammography outweighs the risk for radiation exposure for women with normal risk factors. A mammogram is a covered benefit for Paramount members. Highvolume ProMedica Health System radiology sites have expanded their hours and added appointment times to help accommodate your busy daytime schedule. For your convenience, your doctor can fax the order for a mammogram to the in-Plan radiology site of your choice. |
