Where to Seek Treatment
for Illness or Injuries

Do you know when you should see your Primary Care Physician (PCP) and when you should go to the emergency room (ER)? For conditions such as upper respiratory infections, chronic pain, rashes or coughs, call your PCP. Services that you get through your PCP are more cost-effective and may be more comprehensive because your PCP is familiar with your health history.

Visiting the ER for minor illnesses could mean that you’ll have to pay the costs involved. Keep in mind that ERs are often overcrowded due to patients seeking care with routine medical complaints that can be handled by their PCP. So when should you go to the ER? It’s appropriate to visit the ER for trauma, symptoms of heart attack or stroke, severe pain, or difficulty breathing.
