Use OTC Medicines Safely

Photo of a woman and her childOver-the-counter (OTC) medicines are drugs you can buy without a prescription, such as aspirin. Some people think these drugs are not very strong. This is not true.

OTC medicines are powerful. They can be dangerous if you do not use them the right way.

  • Follow the label exactly. This shows you how much to take and when to take it. What if you do not feel better? Do not take more than the dose listed. It could make you sick. Ask the pharmacist or call your doctor for advice.
  • Do not take more than 1 OTC drug unless you check with your doctor or the pharmacist. Be sure you tell him or her every medicine you take—including prescriptions. Different types of drugs may interact and harm you.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking OTC drugs.
