Safe Fun in the Sun

Sunglasses on a beachChildren and babies need protection from the sun when they go outside—even on cloudy days.

It’s best to keep babies younger than age 6 months out of the sun. These three things can keep other kids safe:

  • Clothing. Dress your children in lightweight long sleeves and long pants. Be sure to have them wear a hat with a brim.
  • Sunglasses. Buy sunglasses that say “blocks 99 percent of UV rays.”
  • Sunscreen. Use waterproof sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.

The SPF of a sunscreen indicates the time period you can stay in the sun without burning based on your skin complexion. Use this chart to determine the best sunscreen for you and your kids.
