Shake the Salt from Your Diet

Mother and son smilingPeople with high blood pressure should eat less salt. But almost everyone gets more than they need.

Even if you don’t have high blood pressure, it’s better for your health to trim the salt from your diet. Here are some ideas:

  • Try sprinkling lemon juice instead of salt on vegetables.
  • For fish, chicken, and meat, use onions, garlic, and spices or herbs.
  • Take the salt shaker off the table. Replace it with pepper or other no-salt seasonings.
To eat less salt overall, try these tips:
  • Choose plenty of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables.
  • Rinse canned vegetables and fish before serving. These foods usually contain added salt.
  • Add seasonings to plain rice or noodles instead of buying instant mixes.
  • Try to avoid canned or packaged soups, frozen pizza, and frozen dinners. They all usually have a lot of salt.
